In the past many attempts have been made to augment wrinkles or depressed scars with biological or artificial implants, such as autologous fat, liquid silicone, bovine collagen implants, Fibrel, and etc. However, these materials failed due to absorption, complicated side effects, and unwanted material behavior. For instance, autologous fat is routinely resorbed within several weeks when implanted subdermally. Therefore autologous fat injections have to be repeated numerous times to maintain its efficacy. Liquid silicone, which is commonly used for its ease of application, appears many years later in the form of dislocation, granuloma formation, and late allergic reaction. Bioplastique, silicone microparticles with rough surfaces, cause extensive granuloma formation and thus should not be used for soft tissue augmentation. In the case of bovine collagen implants and Fibril, they appear with great result in early stage; but, over time, these benefits proved to be transitory.
Artecoll is an injectable implant for long-lasting correction of wrinkles and other skin defects. Artecoll consists of fine polymethy1-methacrylate (PMMA) microspheres suspended 1:3 in a 3.5% collagen solution. The size of the microsphere of 30μm-40μm diameter is small enough to allow subermal implantation using a 27-gauge needle. Phagocytosis and dislocation of the implant is prevented by fast encapsulation of each single microsphere with connective tissue. The main indication for Artecoll implantation is the naturally occurring folds, wrinkles, and depressed scar.
Our results from prospective study of 16 patients demonstrated that

1) Tentatively, study shows Artecoll to promise permanence in skin and soft tissue augmentation.
2) The main indication for Artecoll implantation is the naturally occurring folds and wrinkles in the face. Contraindications are thin and flaccid skin, susceptibility to keloids, and atrophic skin diseases.
3) There was one chronic postoperative complication out of 16 patients.
4) Disadvantages : No appropriate methods to solve the nodule formed after injection and high cost effectiveness.
