Since the nose is in a prominent position in the central region of the face and projects forward from it, it catches the eye of the beholder first and foremost. Thus it is apparent reason why augmentation of the nose is usually the most common procedure performed by the plastic surgeon.
For many decades, various kinds of implants have been used for augmentation rhinoplasty. Until the plastic surgery became the specialty in 1970's in Korea, non-diplomates or general practitioners, who were not trained special course, has operated the plastic surgery of nose, and many patients suffered from the surgical complication or sequeale. Total 611 patients who have been injected or implanted with foreign materials and have been treated at the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Soon Chun Hyang University Hospital, from March 1988 to February, 1998. The alteration of implants, incidence of complications, duration of secondary rhinoplasty after operation were studied.

The obtained results were as follows :
1. The sex ratio was 6 males to 605 females.
2. Ninety seven(16 percent) of the 611 patients had been augmented by paraffin injection, sixty one of the ninety seven had been augmented before the 1970's, ten of the ninety seven had been augmented after 1990.
3. Before the 1970's, many kinds of material, such as ivory(9 cases), plastics(11 cases), bamboo piece, rubber eraser etc, were used in augmentation rhinoplasty.
4. After the 1970's. the largest number of nasal implant was silicone implant. During past two decades, which was thick due to use of silicone block however thickness of implant has been reduced due to use of readymade silicon implant.
5. The most widely used implant was an L-shaped during the 1970's and the 1980's, however after the 1990's, I-shaped(or boat shaped) implant was more frequently used.
6. The most common cause of implant removal was patient's unsatisfaction, and other causes were implant malposition, cancer phobia, mobility, extrusion and inflammation, and redness.
7. Many operations were done by non-diplomate or general practitioner before the 1970's. however after the 1980's most rhinoplasty was operated by the specialist of plastic surgery, as the number of them has been increased
