Since the introduction of the silastic gel implant Cronin and Gerow in 1962, augmentation mammoplasty has been wide spread used through the world. They presented their report using the natural feel silicone gel prosthesis for cosmetic mammary augmentation to the third international congress of plastic surgery in 1964. Although the efficacy and various problems of breast augmentation have been discussed for long time. According to the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, augmentation mammoplasty was the second most frequently performed cosmetic procedure in 1990, after suction assisted lipectomy and it generalized as within the tenth cosmetic surgery in Korea. The efficacy of augmentation mammoplasty included effects of large breast on a women's body image, interpersonal relationships, sence of confidence as well as her opinions about beauty, lifestyle, general health and sex life. These efficacies act as motivations of women seeking augmentation. In our study, 72 consecutive patients, from 1990 March to 1998 March, for augmentation mammoplasty using silicone gel implant and saline implant were reviewed about various postoperative problems. Capsular contracture(11%) was the most common problem in the postoperative complications of augmentation mammoplasty and the next were implant rupture(8.3%) and asymmetry(8.3%). Other problems were hematoma(6.9%), deflation(5.6%), infection(4.2%), sensory change(2.8%) and so on. Recently, substitutive materials with more safe and better texture like peanut oil, bio-oncotic gel polymer matrix, triglyceride oil, and hyaluronic acid have studied for filling material or breast implant.
