The most versatile skin that can be used for mulitiple purposes is artificial skin. Keratinocyts culture is no longer a difficult problem and efforts are being made to resurface denuede areas of a burn wound with cultured keratinocyte. However such efforts have been confronted with certain problems:the take rate of the cultured kerationocyte graft is low due to the absence of the dermis component and the frequent ocurrences of wound contracture and hypertrophic scar formation. to solve these problems, many experiments are being conducted to create an artificial dermis.
In our experiment, 0.5% and 1.0% atelocollagen sponges enriched with cultured fibroblasts were used as the dermis matrix for the artificial dermis. 0.5% and 1.0% atelocollagen sponges were made through a freeze drying procedure of the 0.5% and 1.0% atelocollagen solution, respectively. Lastly, cultured fibroblasts were obtained from a culture of rat skin dermis. 0.5% and 1.0% atelocollagen concentrations were used to compare the rate of replacement to the normal dermis.
The artificial dermises created form the 0.5% and 1.0% atelocollagen sponge matrices were applied to the man-made full thickness defect of the rat skin. Gross, light microscopic and electron microscopic findings were observed periodically.
  The results are as follows:
 1. The artificial dermis was light-gray colored, rather elastic, and has enough rigidity for handling.
 2. Neovascularization bagan on the 7th post-graft day and culminated on the 10th post-graft day.
3. During the 14 days of observation, the artificial dermis made with the 0.5% atelocollagen showed near-normal epidermal differentiation with minimal contracture compared with the one from the 1.0% atelocollagen.
In conclusion, more varied and advanced animal experiments are needed such as the use of the other concentrations of the atelocollagen and the application of the artificial dermis attached with the cultured keratinocyte.
